ARIZONA REPUBLIC/PHOENIX GAZETTE 1995
BEST AMERICAN RESTAURANT IN CENTRAL/SOUTHWEST PHOENIX
Established in 1985, Lone Star Steaks was the original Texas steakhouse in Phoenix. This year, a Kansas conglomerate planted one of its Lone Star Cafes on Camelback. To prevent legal wrangling, Steve Freidkin and Jim Mitchell changed their chuck wagon's name from Lone Star Steaks to TEXAZ Grill while retaining its all-American style.
A collage of cowboy clutter cover the walls. Stuffed critters watch over the cozy booths. Sidle up to the horseshoe bar to watch a game, play dominoes or shoot the bull.
The menu lists USDA Choice aged beef cuts, such as rib-eye and New York strip ($11.95 each), Freidy's Filet ($12.95) and TEXAZ T-Bone ($14.95).
Oniony slaw, plump steak fries, and fresh biscuits and rolls will fill your plate. For the meat-must-be-doctored-up folks, A-1, Heinz 57 and Worcestershire sauces are on each table. Range riders can toss Crystal hot peppers into the slaw or chase a chunk of steak with a couple of the red-hot garnishes.
Chicken-fried steak, fried chicken and fried catfish augment the menu. Sit a spell and sample bread pudding (with whiskey sauce) or homemade pecan pie.
A thoughtful touch: toothpicks at every table.
