After 33-Years, New Family Takes The Reins At TEXAZ Grill

Longtime TEXAZ Grill fans, the Nguyen family has purchased this iconic restaurant from co-founder Steve Freidkin, will keep the same down-home menu and welcoming atmosphere  
(Phoenix, Ariz.) –  After 33 years and more than 950,081 Chicken Fried Steaks, TEXAZ Grill owner, Steve Freidkin was ready to hang up his hat, but didn’t want to close this beloved Phoenix landmark. Enter the Nguyen family who immigrated to Houston in 1989, moved to Arizona in 2007, and have been longtime fans of this Texas-style steakhouse and jumped at the opportunity to take over this popular eatery located on the NE corner of 16th St. and Bethany Home Rd. (6003 North 16th St., 602-248-7827). The new owners are excited to continue serving the same down-home recipes of comfort classics prepared by the current kitchen crew, some of whom have been at TEXAZ Grill for over 20 years, paired with TEXAZ’s famously friendly wait staff, and the same quirky-cool environment overflowing with Texas-themed tchotchkes and silly souvenirs lining the walls and ceilings.  

“Our entire family is excited to take the reins at TEXAZ Grill and continue the proud traditions started by Steve Freidkin and Jim Mitchell way back in 1985,” says Long Nguyen, who will run the restaurant with his family and the existing management team. “Most important, we want TEXAZ fans to know their restaurant is in good hands, and we look forward to serving up Phoenix’s best steaks, chicken fried steaks and more for another 33 years.”

“After three plus decades as owner, chief cook and bottle washer at TEXAZ Grill, I’m ready to ride off into the sunset,” says Steve Freidkin. “But first I had to make sure that my staff and our customers, who are both like family to me, were all in great hands. It was very important to me that TEXAZ remains a family-run restaurant.”  Freidkin will be assisting the Nguyen’s during the transition throughout the month of November and says longtime TEXAZ Grill fans will continue to love the spot.  “The staff makes TEXAZ Grill great, and I know that they will have the same friendly service and use the same recipes that we’ve had for the past 33 years, including chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, TEXAZ Red Chili, pecan pie, and more.”

TEXAZ Grill’s menu is truly Texan, not only with traditional cuisine but with the size of the dishes as well.  From its signature Chicken Fried Steak (more than 950,081 served to date) and award-winning BBQ, to an authentic bowl of Red (Chili), TEXAZ Grill has captured the essence of the Lone Star State. The steaks are cut fresh daily, on site, using only USDA Choice aged beef. If guests have room for dessert, the signature Pecan Pie or Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce topped with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream is the perfect complement to any roadhouse dish. TEXAZ Grill also features daily specials, and opens early on Sunday to serve a hearty brunch menu.

TEXAZ Grill’s unique setting is a tribute to all the things that Texas devotees love about the Lone Star State. Trucker hats hang from the ceiling while Texas-themed pictures and artwork engulf the walls. Guests can enjoy an eclectic collection of tunes on the TEXAZ Grill Jukebox, loaded with 45s by native-born Texans. Anyone desiring a true taste of Texas and down-home good cookin’ will find no place in town with the same level of authenticity and affordability as TEXAZ Grill.

Open Monday through Thursday from 11am –9pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am-10pm, and opening early on Sundays (10am – 9pm) for brunch, TEXAZ Grill has been recognized locally as the Best Local Treasure, Best American Restaurant, and Best Affordable Steak Dinner, and nationally for Tops for Value.
